Did you know that 50 government contractors maintain
roughly 50% of all prime contracting dollars? This trend means
that more contracts are being consolidated into larger dollar value
obligations.
The end result is that small businesses in general and women-owned
businesses have a greater opportunity to thrive in the Federal subcontracting
arena.
How can you access the Federal subcontracting market? Below are
five tools that will assist you in expanding your business to include
subcontracting opportunities.
1. Directory of Prime Contractors.
Be proactive in finding primes and developing business relationships.
Get your product or service known to the prime contractor community
before Federal awards are made.
2. SUB-Net.
Find subcontracting opportunities via SUB-Net, a database of solicitations posted
by prime contractors. Just as you search for prime contracting
opportunities, it is equally important that you research subcontracting
relationships.
3. Teaming.
Find other small businesses to team with to jointly bid on prime
contracts. By pooling resources, small businesses increase their
opportunities to compete on a more level playing field with large
multi-industry prime contractors.
4. DoD
Subcontracting Opportunities. Did you know that the DoD accounts
for almost 80% of all Federal subcontracting dollars awarded? This
directory provides the names and addresses of DoD prime contractors
and the names and telephone numbers of Small Business Liaison Officers
(SBLOs), who are contractor employees responsible for the success
of subcontracting programs at various plant sites. Also, this directory
cites products and services supplied to the DoD.
5. Pentagon
Renovation Subcontracting Opportunities. The Pentagon is currently
undergoing a $1 billion, 12 year comprehensive renovation which
opens another universe of subcontracting opportunities for women-owned
businesses.
